Founded in 1910 West Portland church has been a long standing positive presence for Christ as a place of worship and community gatherings in southwest Portland. The purpose of this faith community has not changed, however, 107 years later the culture and near-by community has. We are investing in our future by focusing on community engagement. We are seeking excellent candidates to serve as a community organizer to and co-conspirator with the Pastor to transform the culture and mission of West Portland UMC to bridge our vision and mission with the needs of the neighborhood.

  • Engage the art and practices of community organizing
  • Develop relationships with the geographic community currently not engaged in the mission and ministry of West Portland UMC focusing on families and the next generation of active disciples
  • Collaborate with the Pastor to develop worship, fellowship, and discipleship opportunities to encounter the risen Christ in ways relevant and engaging for the community

QUALIFICATIONS Experience in a range of community organizing strategies and tactics, especially listening. Strong verbal and written communication skills in English. Flexible and comfortable working with multiple generations and stages of life. Strong ability to manage calendars and organize information, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, Gmail, and Google calendars. Strong orientation toward growth and improvement, creative thinking and problem solving. Ability to attend training, community meetings, and staff meetings. Has experience with children, youth, and/or family ministry.
