Position summary: To take daily responsibility for the cleanliness and workability of the church building. Based on 40 hours per month.
 
Reports to: Pastor and trustee team.
 
Primary Responsibilities: To sweep, pick-up, re-order supplies, clear trash, and keep the interior of the various working rooms in optimal usable condition. Vacuum rugs and mop floors, waxing and rug cleaning as needed. See that windows are cleaned. Regulate heating and cooling of building, guided by church calendar of activities and HVAC codes. Lock all doors and secure building on Sunday afternoon after the services and activities are over. Keep entrance areas clean and orderly.
Provide first response to basic church repair requests on a weekly basis. Work with church office to contact contracted providers. Refer work orders to trustees.
Check and replenish supplies in all bathrooms and both kitchens.
Responsibilities include upper and lower level kitchens, office space, classrooms, sanctuary, preschool, restrooms, hallways, stairways, choir room, nursery, and fellowship hall.
 
Secondary Responsibilities: To correct maintenance problems that require immediate attention and to keep a list of those problems that can be deferred for Solve-it-Saturday volunteers. Example: Replace burned out light bulbs if necessary or defer if reasonable. During annual summer children’s school programs, make sure classrooms are cleaned, by yourself or those who have used them.
The custodian will have no responsibility for the grounds except for keeping the recycling area, the seven entry ways and the parking lot in presentable order.
 
Knowledge and skills: Must have a working knowledge of routine building maintenance and repairs. Must provide first response to basic building repair requests. Must be able to use light cleaning equipment. Ability to learn and prioritize multiple tasks at a given time. Ability to analyze and problem solve alone and in consultation with other knowledgeable specialists. Ability to work alone and in concert with others. Must be able to work with office manager and respond to work orders.
 
Work experience: Demonstrated ability to do assigned tasks.
 
Physical requirements: Capacity to move light furniture, be safe on step-ladders, sweep, mop, and use cleaning solutions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and/or sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
 
General requirements: The custodian might interact with visitors, those coming to the church on business, and those coming to the church for assistance. Maintaining a welcoming and helpful attitude is necessary to represent the congregation as welcoming and the church as the Body of Christ.

Pay
The pay range will be between $5,000-$6,500 annually based on experience.
