The Local Church's Role in Candidacy

The Pastor/Ministry Leader at a United Methodist related ministry

Your first step in moving toward ministry as a leader in the UMC is your own pastor or ministry leader.  They would love to hear your call story, how God has been working in your life, and will walk with you in the study of a brief booklet called The Christian as Minister which brings the opportunity of looking at and discussing the various ways by which we can follow God's call upon our lives.

Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC)

After discussing this call with your pastor and your District Superintendent (DS) who will place you into the candidacy UMCARES system, and assign you a mentor, preparing for the summer Candidacy Summit, you will need to meet with your local church SPRC committee.  A representative from the DCOM will join you at and often facilitates this meeting for you to share with them this calling on your life. Eventually this group needs to vote to recommend you to their yearly charge conference. The SPRC also needs to know that in addition to prayer, they are responsible to assist with paying for the psychological evaluation that will take place at the Candidacy Summit.

Charge Conference

At this meeting of the church with the district, you will be voted upon based upon the recommendation of the SPRC committee. This written ballot vote is the local church's affirmation of your call into ordained ministry.
