Lake Oswego United Methodist Church Position Position Title: Handbell Choir Director Status: Non-exempt Reports To: Senior Pastor and Director of Music and Arts FTE: .20 (6-8 hours/week) Revision Date: May, 2021 General Description: Lake Oswego United Methodist Church (LOUMC) position descriptions are guidelines. Statement of Inclusivity: · We affirm that all individuals are of sacred worth, without exception · We commit ourselves to be in ministry for and with all persons, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, faith, sexual orientation, gender identity, economic condition, marital status or abilities · We welcome all persons who seek God’s love through Jesus Christ and who desire to journey together toward greater understanding and mutual respect General Function: Under the general supervision of the Director of Music & Arts, Handbell Choir Director will provide leadership in LOUMC’s music ministry specifically for the handbell choir and will work closely with the Director of Music & Arts to carry out the mission and ministry of the church in collaboration with the Senior Pastor and the worship teams. The Handbell Choir Director will be responsible for forming and maintaining effective working relationships with the congregation, members of the community that are involved with LOUMC, and with other LOUMC staff. This position will be working in the LOUMC offices in Lake Oswego, OR. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: · Select appropriate music, coordinate music with the pastor and Music and Arts Director; manage the bell choir music library. · Lead all handbell choir rehearsals. · Direct the handball choir when it performs at periodic worship services; coordinate the handbell choir with any other musicians who may be performing. · Attend meetings, as needed, related to the LOUMC music program. · Direct the handbell choirs for special events such as concerts or fundraisers; coordinate with others organizing the special events. · Recruit handbell choir members and arrange for substitutes as needed. · Actively participate to support positive growth and change; suggest, help develop and execute, as a team, changes within LOUMC that support the growth and re-visioning of the church, its staff and its congregants; communicate in a manner that clearly supports the direction of the church as a whole and not the view of single individuals. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: ? Exhibit a commitment to LOUMC’s music ministry. ? Demonstrate a basic understanding of the liturgy, ritual and ministry of LOUMC as it relates to LOUMC’s music program. ? Demonstrate proficiency leading volunteer musicians and experience with musical leadership. ? Perform all responsibilities with a minimum of supervision. ? Demonstrate ability to adjust to varying work needs. ? Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality; exercise discretion and sensitivity when dealing with confidential church and personnel matters. Core Value Requirements: ? Education and Experience Requirements: · Associate or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in music or a related field or at least 3 years’ experience working as a handbell director in a church environment or similar organization. · Musical ability allowing for effective teaching of volunteers. · Proficiency in at least one performance area. Other Requirements: Personal transportation is required allowing for the ability to work at LOUMC’s offices. Personal transportation for church operations is not a requirement of this position. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office environment, at community events, and/or at other locations as deemed necessary. This position may require occasional early morning, weekend or evening work. Position requires ability to sit for extended periods as well as stand occasionally. Position requires use of computer, telephone, fax machine and copier, in addition to the church’s musical instruments and audio/visual equipment and may require accessing locations by use of stairs.
