Tigard United Methodist Church is hiring for its Director of Youth Ministry position. This is a salaried, half-time (0.5 FTE) position. SUMMARY POSITION DESCRIPTION -- Director of Youth Ministry The Tigard United Methodist Church (TUMC) Director of Youth Ministry (DYM) provides excellent and creative leadership to TUMC’s youth ministry program. The DYM serves not only the youth of Tigard UMC, but the youth of the whole Tigard community. Position Description The mission of the Director of Youth Ministry (DYM) position is to make meaningful connections with youth (grades 6-12) – both those in the church and those in the wider community – and, through those connections, to build-up and nurture a lively, engaged, and inclusive community of youth rooted in the grace and love of Jesus Christ. This community of youth will: • Value and affirm each other’s gifts, • Support and encourage one another, • Be a safe place to be oneself, • Live their faith and serve others, • Explore their spirituality, • Ask and explore deep questions, • Grow in their understanding of a mature Christian faith. Core Position Responsibilities: 1. Build a cohesive and inclusive youth ministry program. 2. Focus on connecting with youth in Tigard – particularly Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) youth – by networking in the wider Tigard community (through the schools, youth organizations, non-profits) to build trust and credibility for the youth program. 3. Welcome and integrate new youth into the youth group, particularly youth who are not already connected to TUMC. 4. Create an affirming space for LGBTQIA youth. Incorporate LGBTQIA issues into youth group programs and discussions. 5. In consultation with the youth, schedule, plan, and carry out multiple youth gatherings/activities each month in a way that allows youth with various schedules to participate. 6. Communicate with youth regularly using a variety of tools to reach as many youth as possible (email, texts, social media, etc.). 7. Schedule, plan, and carry out at least one mission trip per year. 8. Collaborate with the youth to plan and lead at least one Youth Sunday worship service per year. 9. Serve as an advocate for youth involvement in all aspects of TUMC’s ministry. 10. Communicate with parents regularly about youth group activities and dynamics. The position is a salaried, half-time (0.5 FTE or 20 hours/week). The annual salary shall be established commensurate with experience, job responsibilities, and educational background.
