The First United Methodist Church of Portland, Oregon is a dynamic, progressive Christian community located in the heart of Portland, Oregon, currently seeking a full time Church Administrator.

The Church Administrator directs the business management and operation of the church.  This is a multi-faceted position including supervision of administrative staff, support for church committees, maintenance of human resource policies, tracking income and expenditures, drafting annual operating budgets and marketing/scheduling facilities use by church and outside groups.  He/she works under the immediate supervision of the Senior Pastor.

Our Church Administrator will have organizational management experience, and a willingness to work within the unique community of a vital, growing church.  Computer skills in word processing and database management are essential, as are strong communication and organization skills.  This position also requires a level of flexibility, initiative, efficiency, reliability, collegiality, and attention to detail.  An enthusiastic, positive, optimistic approach to work and life are also helpful.

1.  Accounting and Financial Management – includes drafting annual budget, monitoring income and expenses, processing invoices and cutting checks, preparing monthly income/expense reports, preparing bi-monthly payroll for all employees, preparing tax reports and monitoring legal requirements.

2.  Human Resource Functions – includes submitting background checks and monitoring documentation for all employees and volunteers, maintaining current HR policies along with personnel committee.

3.  Facility Use – includes scheduling all church events and maintaining website calendar, marketing and coordinating facility use to outside groups to build income stream for the church, monitoring ongoing maintenance/repair/remodeling needs for the facility.

4.  Supervision and Inter-personal relationships – includes supervising administrative staff and volunteers, collaborating with pastoral and program staff to further the mission of the church, maintaining accurate records and providing support to congregation members and committees.

Equivalent of a Bachelor’s Degree is required.  A minimum of 2 years’ experience in the operational management of an organization, as well as a basic understanding of non-profit systems is required.  The ability to work with a diverse staff, to provide hospitality to the general public, and communicate effectively both in written and verbal forms is needed.  The ability to think strategically and to anticipate needs is helpful.  Competence working with Quicken, EXCEL, Microsoft Word is essential.

Compensation is commensurate with experience.  Range is $52,000 to $57,000.
