Registration still open for UMW's summer Mission u

It’s not too late to get signed up for a Mission u event in the Oregon-Idaho Conference this summer.   United Methodist Women have put together the classes and seminars on a wide range of issues in wide-ranging places for participants to learn, grow in their faith and increase fellowship. These classes are not just geared for UMW, either. Men are encouraged to attend.   “In attending Mission u people study difficult issues through faith lenses,” said Becky Warren, president of Oregon-Idaho UMW. ...

Conference approves post-GC2019 fallout legislation

As the Oregon-Idaho Conference and the Western Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church continue to proclaim they are a “home for all” post-General Conference 2019, there were a few legislative items passed during the annual conference session in Eugene that are reactions and calls for action from churches and leadership in the local Conference. Approved on the Consent agenda was Action Request no. 4, which calls for structural change in the United Methodist Church. Be It Resolved That the...

Help Needed with Friend Making

A part of my work as a member of the Oregon-Idaho Cabinet is to work with the Common Table Project through Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon. I want to share with you some of that work, and to ask your help with it. On Sunday June 2nd I co-authored an Op-Ed in The Oregonian titled “An antidote to hate crimes is deliberate ‘friend-making.’”  You can read it here.  As you will see, this is a faith-based movement to bridge the increasingly toxic political divide of our times by finding common ground...

Oregon-Idaho Conference commissions queer clergy candidate

In some ways Taylor Gould’s commissioning as a provisional elder in the Oregon-Idaho Conference is a big deal; but in others it’s not. Gould, 26, identifies as bisexual/queer, and was one of six individuals commissioned and ordained Friday night in Eugene, Oregon. She’s will be the first queer person in the Conference to be a candidate for ministry under the new, more punitive rules for LGBTQ+ persons adopted at General Conference that will take effect in 2020. But she’s not the first openly ...

Six new leaders ordained and commissioned on Friday

The six candidates for ordination and commissioning in the Oregon-Idaho Conference did not walk into Friday night’s worship service as individuals. Instead, this tight-knit group of clergy candidates have been meeting via Zoom calls and in person since February’s Special Called General Conference to discern their path, even as they answered the historic questions of faith and promised to uphold the Book of Discipline. “Initially, right after General Conference, I was questioning everything,” ...

Bishop's address calls for more love, blessing, salvation

In this CrossOver year where the United Methodist Church has been discerning whether to stay together or split apart, Greater Northwest Area Bishop Elaine Stanovsky knows the church isn’t going to be the same. “General Conference (2019) sought to chart this new way forward,” she said in her opening episcopal address. “But it may turn out to be a tipping point that tears us in two.” Since that gathering in February, she said she’s heard from people at every point along the spectrum who feel ...
