Church responses needed on Abundant Health efforts

Abundant Health has been deemed a priority and top initiative in the United Methodist Church as well as the Oregon-Idaho Conference, but help is needed from local churches to continue to expand this vital ministry. The Conference’s Abundant Health Team is hoping to identify and enhance the number of churches engaged in this work. Church leaders are being encouraged to fill out this short survey  to identify the efforts already underway and ways in which the Conference’s Abundant Health team can...

Oregon man finds post-retirement passion on the road for UMCOR

There’s no grandiose story about how Steve Matthews came to be the road warrior that he is – traveling through the deserts, mountains and coastline of the western United States – to deliver supplies and relief kits to the United Methodist Committee on Relief Salt Lake City Depot. He’s just a retired guy from Albany, Oregon, who happened to have a truck. “I don’t want to know how much money I’ve spent,” Matthews said. “I don’t want to know how many miles I’ve put on my truck.” After retiring ...

Oregon-Idaho churches celebrate UMCOR Sunday making kits

Celebrating UMCOR Sunday has become a work of precision and coupon-clipping for the people of Oak Grove United Methodist Church. On March 11, church-goers in this community just south of Portland will create their own assembly line as they put together 300 health kits for the United Methodist Committee on Relief depot in Salt Lake City. The church can make a record number of health kits this year because of local coordinator Laurie Yadon’s watchful eyes. The church raises money in August to ...

Barber ready for 'revival' as new congregational developer

Perhaps it’s time for a revival in the United Methodist Church. At least that’s the word that keeps popping into the brain of Leroy Barber, the new developer of congregational vitality for the Oregon-Idaho Conference of the United Methodist Church. “I’m getting this inkling about revival,” said Barber, who started his new position this week. “You have this hope and dream and you’re inviting everyone in.” It’s a new kind of revival path that he thinks the United Methodist Churches can head ...

Mustard seed ministries across the conference moving mountains

If outreach ministry is akin to the gospel of Matthew – having faith the size of a mustard seed – then there are some mountains being moved in the Oregon-Idaho United Methodist Conference. Whether it was handing out granola bars to kids, hosting an open mic night for people of color or making Christmas stockings for kids in need, several churches across the Oregon-Idaho Conference stepped up to try new ministries in 2017. It wasn’t challenging and didn’t break the bank to achieve, either. “It’...

Northwest UM Foundation growth spurt requires more help

As the Northwest United Methodist Foundation has grown and changed shape over the years, so has the need for additional staff to support churches in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. The number of churches the Foundation is serving continues to grow as does the value of the investments it oversees. This has prompted the need for a new associate director who Executive Director Thomas Wilson hopes will be working in Oregon to better serve the churches in this region of the Greater Northwest Episcopal ...

Early bird registration for NLI ends Jan. 31

Church leaders have the opportunity to engage in fruitful discussion about ministry and more at Boise First United Methodist Church Cathedral of the Rockies’ annual Northwest Leadership Institute in March. The theme for this year’s two-day seminar March 8-9 is “Re-(form)ation.” Semper reformanda (always reforming) is one of the enduring slogans often associated with the Protestant reformation. The church is here, 500 years later, reforming again. The Rev. Duane Anders of Cathedral of the ...
