Montavilla UMC “paves” way for church outreach in Portland neighborhood

Montavilla United Methodist Church has decided to take church to the streets – well, the sidewalks at least – in its Portland neighborhood as a new way of reaching out to the community. The church recently installed 22 12-inch by 12-inch concrete pavers engraved with inspirational quotes that reflect how diversely the church defines Christianity. “We thought, ‘What would it look like to have 22 one-sentence sermons outside of the church?’” said Rev. Tim Winslea. Quotes such as: “Hope will ...

Progress made, but pressure still needed, on releasing detained asylum seekers in Oregon

Since Oregon’s Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice’s (IMIrJ) began its August call-to-action protesting the continued detention of asylum-seekers in federal prison here, some positive steps have been made, but organizers say there’s still more work to be done. In weekly vigils/rallies/protests outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) offices in Portland in August, nine faith leaders from different denominations – including United Methodists – have been arrested so far ...

Portsmouth Union gets to work on affordable housing project

Portsmouth Union Church in the north Portland neighborhood looks right now – from the outside – like it’s in chaos. Last week, rubble from one-third of the building was strewn across the west side of the lot, there was some issue with the water, and two outhouses are now sitting on the east side parking lot. While it may look a mess, things are very much on the move for this church which has combined two separate denominations into one church family while also readying itself to tackle ...

Call to Action: Signatures needed to help publish Oregon voter’s pamphlet statement

This statement will join similar ones from faith communities who support the existing legislation which defends against the racial profiling of immigrants. This ...
