Helping our Tongan siblings: An appeal from Lents Tongan Fellowship
To Whom It May Concern:
My name is Rev. Fungalei Taufoou, and I am the pastor of the Lents’ Tongan Fellowship of the United Methodist Church. I am writing to you on behalf of our church families’ concerns for the people in Tonga who have suffered from the volcanic eruptions of January 14, 2022. A consequent tsunami wiped out several islands and destroyed many people’s homes, boats, farms, and produce. The ash from the volcanic eruption was and I believe is still causing breathing difficulties for many. As of today, several families are struggling for food and shelter.
So, our church has decided to gather resources to support the people of Tonga. We have arranged a 40ft container which would leave on 21st of April with essential items. The budget for this mission is somewhere between $25,000 to $30,000, including the cost of the container. We are asking people to donate, clothing, toilet paper, rice, bandages, hand sanitizer, sugar, cases of water, or anything that would help the people of Tonga. We have also set up drop-off sites within Multnomah County for those who would like to support this mission.
Thank you in advance for considering this vision to support the people of Tonga.
