John Shaw joins Conference communications staff

11/30/2022

With a degree in film, media studies and communications, John Shaw brings a wealth of experience to the position of multi-media communications specialist at the Oregon-Idaho Conference of The United Methodist Church.

Shaw will serve in this position part-time, under the guidance of communications manager Kristen Caldwell. This is the position Caldwell held prior to her promotion as the communications manager in 2019.

His primary responsibility will be to help tell the stories of the people and churches of the Oregon-Idaho Conference through various media platforms.

“I’m excited to help tell more stories from the community in some awesome new ways,” Shaw said.

Shaw is a recent transplant to the Portland area and has worked on documentaries, television pilots and short film series. He grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and earned his degree from Louisiana State University. His passion for media began as a youth growing up and helping in his local church with different media projects.

While working for the Conference part-time, Shaw and his business partner operate Stormforged Studios and they’ve produced a TV Pilot called “Tavern Brawl.” He’s worked as a cinematographer, producer, editor, writer and director, to name a few titles.

“John brings so many necessary and wonderful gifts to our work in communications,” said Caldwell. “As our churches change, we need to adapt our communications styles and strategies to better tell our stories as disciples of Christ. John brings the multi-media experience we need to share our stories of love, justice, hope and peace.”

When not working for the Conference or doing freelance film work, Shaw likes to build computers, cook, and spend time with his girlfriend and family. He can be reached by emailing jshaw@umoi.org or calling 503-802-9202.
