Mary M. Gaither, surviving spouse of pastor Sydney B. Gaither, died on Saturday, June 26, 2021.  She is survived by her daughters, Joy Kelley and Carol Luczycki; and five grandchildren.
 
Reverend Gaither served at Bethel and Greentop in the Missouri East Conference, De Beque, Atwood Willard and Lafayette Louisville in the Rocky Mountain Conference and Blue Hill in the Nebraska Conference. He served at Coos Bay, Astoria, Cottage Grove, Dallas, Tillamook, Rupert, Odell, Pine Grove, Sweet Home, Springfield and Veneta in the Oregon-Idaho Conference.  He retired in 1981.
 
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

Reverend Martha A. Oldham, died on Thursday, June 17, 2021.    

Rev. Oldham served at Unalaska UMC in the Alaska Missionary Conference and Ashton UMC in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. She retired in 2004.

Jean W. Hand, surviving spouse of pastor James Hand, died on Monday, June 14, 2021.  She is survived by her son, David Hand and daughter, Sarah Murphy; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
 
Reverend James Hand served the Coden-Irvington-Heron Bay, Mount Vernon, Livingston and Citronelle in the Alabama-West Florida Annual Conference; and as a Professor at Willamette University in the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference. He retired in 1990.
 
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later time.

William James “Jim” Stuart III                                                June 28, 1936 – May 29, 2021
                           
The Reverend Dr. William James “Jim” Stuart III, died on Saturday, May 29, 2021, in Christchurch, New Zealand.  He is survived by his wife, Gillian Southey; and three children. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren. 

Rev. Stuart served at First German UMC, as Professor of Religion, Greenville College,  John Wesley Lecturer in Systematic Theology at College of St. John the Evangelist in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference; Chaplain at Lewis and Clark College and Law School, Portland, in the Oregon-Idaho Conference; University Chaplain and Lecturer in Sociology and Peace Studies, University of Canterbury, Senior Minister at St. Andrews on the Terrace Presbyterian Church in Wellington, New Zealand; and Wainoni Methodist Church, Christchurch, New Zealand. Rev. Stuart retired in 2006.
A celebration of his life was held on June 3, 2021, at Durham Street Methodist Church, 1/309 Durham Street, Christchurch, New Zealand.

Helen E. Mifflin, surviving spouse of pastor Gerald McCray, died on May 28, 2021.  She is survived by her son, Ronald Mifflin and daughter, Gail Phares; and four grandchildren.
 
Reverend McCray served Inman-Broods in the North Georgia Conference; Missionary to Nome Alaska, Bowling Green United Methodist in the Florida Conference; Portland: Woodlawn, Salem: Leslie/Chemawa, Williamson River/Beatty, Sheridan/Willamina  in the Oregon–Idaho Conference. He retired in 1995.
 
A private memorial service for her family will be scheduled at a later time.

Reverend Boone L. White, died on Monday, May 10, 2021.   He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy E. White, in 2019. He is survived by his children, Kristyn (White) Rock, Amy Emmett, Tracy Allen, Wendy White and Ross White; and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. 

Rev. White served at Salem: Morningside, La Grande: First, Oregon City, Idaho Falls: Trinity, and most recently at Lake Oswego UMC in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. He also served at Anchorage: First UMC in the Alaska Missionary Conference. Rev. White retired in 1992.

A memorial service is planned for a later date as COVID restrictions permit.
 
The family has requested that gifts to honor the memory of Boone be given to the Camp & Retreat Ministries of the OR-ID United Methodist Conference. Reverend Howard L. DeVore, died on Wednesday, May 5, 2021.   He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty DeVore, in 2019. He is survived by two sons, Jon DeVore and Joel Devore; and six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Rev. DeVore served at Fairfield Circuit, Mt. Union, Gravity-Sharpsburg-Conway, and Menlo-Jefferson Center in the Iowa Conference; at Nome, St. John-Hope, and Fairbanks in the Alaska Mission Conference; and at Hermiston in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. Rev. DeVore served in extension ministry as Coordinator of the Alaska State Office of Volunteer Services, and as Coordinator of the Alaska State Office on Aging. Rev. DeVore retired in 1992.

Vicki Tollefson, wife of retired pastor, Rev. Steve Tollefson, died on Thursday, February 25, 2021. Vicki is survived by her husband, Steve; sons Greg, Ben, Ted, and Wes; and four grandchildren.

Rev. Tollefson and Vicki served at Heppner, Boise: Amity, Salem: First, and Boise: First UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. Rev. Tollefson retired in 2012. 
 
Vicki was a current member of the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference Board of Trustees.

The Tollefson family will gather for a private funeral on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at 11am MST at the Cathedral of the Rockies in Boise, ID. Reverend Larry Abell died on Wednesday, February 24, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary, and four children: Robbe, Shilo, Maggie and Amy. He is also survived by five grandchildren.
 
Reverend Abell served Laurelwood UMC and was the Sacred Pilgrimage Director for the North Eastern Oregon Cooperative in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. He was serving at Haines UMC when he died.
 
A memorial service will be held in early June in Portland.

Mary “Betty” Jenkins, surviving spouse of pastor James Jenkins, died on January 29, 2021.  She is survived by her daughters, Mary Stephenson Scott and Carolee “Kelly” Brickner and two grandsons: J. Scott Stephenson and Ian J. Brickner.
 
Reverend Jenkins served at Portland: First, Roseburg, Eugene: First, Idaho Falls: Trinity, Mackay, and Portland: Rose City Park UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference.  Rev. Jenkins also served as the District Superintendent for the Forest Grove District.  He retired in 1987.

Richard “Dick” Googins, spouse of Retired Deacon, Rev. Mary Ann Googins, died on Monday, January 18, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann and two stepchildren: Laura (Richard) Wingold and Bryan (Tracey) Wingold. He is also survived by six grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.
 
Reverend Googins served Salem: First and as Minister of Congregational Life, Tigard in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. She served Greenwood-Laurel Park in Glen Allen in the Virginia Conference. Mary Ann retired in 2010.

Retired Pastor, Rev. John R. Tindell, died on Thursday, December 31, 2020. He is survived by his two children, Raymond, and Cynthia (Cindy). He is also survived by one grandson. His wife, Beryl, preceded him in death.
 
Reverend Tindell served Nampa:First, Gresham:Pleasant Home, Boise:Hillview, and Seaside UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference, most recently at Seaside. He also served Mascotte and Hollywood:Miramar UMCs in the Florida Conference, and Sitka, East Anchorage, Juneau:Northern Light, and Anchorage:First UMCs in the Alaska Conference.  He was a clergy member of the Florida Annual Conference and retired in 1994.

Retired Pastor, Rev. Thomas “Tom” Whitehead died on Saturday, December 5, 2020. He is survived by his wife, Beverly “Bev” and three children: KT, Daniel and Don. He is also survived by four grandchildren.
 
Reverend Whitehead served Bay City/Garibaldi, Milwaukie: St. Paul’s, Salem: First, and Portland: Rose City Park UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. He served as District Superintendent for the former Eastern and Southern Districts in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. He and Bev also served as GBGM missionaries to the Turnagain/Tri Anchor Ecumenical Parish in Alaska. Tom retired in 1997.

Janet M. Newberg, spouse of Rev. Robert F. Newberg, died on Thursday, July 2, 2020.  She is survived by her husband, Rev. Robert Newberg, and ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­one son, Kyl; 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. One son, Robert, preceded her in death two weeks ago.

Deaconess Judi Day died on Sunday, June 28, 2020. She is survived by her husband, Willie, and two children, Erik and Adam, and eight grandchildren. A son, Travis, preceded her in death last March.
 
Judi served as a Deaconess in California, and later at Jefferson UMC in the Oregon-Idaho Conference.  

A memorial service will be held at some point in the future when people can gather.

Reverend Thomas “Tom” Truby died on Monday, March 16, 2020. He is survived by his wife, Laura and two children: Angela and Aaron. He is also survived by two grandchildren.
 
Reverend Truby served Bradshaw-Lushton UMC in the Nebraska Conference and Bath, Climax and Mendon UMCs in the West Michigan Conference. He was appointed to the specialized ministry of pastoral counseling at the Samaritan Counseling Center of Benton Harbor/St. Joseph in the Northern Illinois Conference and Counseling Ministries in the West Michigan Conference. He served Clarkes and Willamette UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. He retired in 2019 and was serving at Clarkes UMC when he died.
 
The congregation at Clarkes UMC has placed their Easter flower cross out in front of the church (18773 S Windy City Road, Mulino, OR 97042) in memory of Tom and are encouraging people to come by as they can to place flowers and then send photos to Laura. A memorial service will be held be held sometime in the future.

Pastor Stoppel served at the Reedsport, Vale and Cherry Park Churches in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. She retired in 2001.

Alice P. Brooks, spouse of Rev. Fred R. Brooks, Jr, died on January 28, 2020.  She is survived by her husband, Fred; children Thomas and Martin; and grandchildren, Elizabeth, Trevor and Clara.
 
Reverend Brooks served at First Methodist Church, Oneonta, New York in the Wyoming Conference. He also served Eugene: Asbury in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. He served as Director of Aid and Admissions and Assistant Dean of Students at University of Chicago, Director of Admissions at Vassar College, Assistant Vice President at the State University of New York, and Director of Admissions at Marywood College. He retired in 1999. He served for a time after retirement at the First United Methodist Church of Forest Home (Forest Home Chapel) in Ithaca, New York in the Upper New York Conference.

 
A memorial service was held at Vestal United Methodist Church, 328 Main Street, Vestal, NY 13850 on February 22, 2020.

Pastor Davey M. Lefler died on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at the age of 66, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He is survived by his wife, Roberta Lefler, and three sons: Chad, Robert, and Joseph. He is also survived by ten grandchildren.

Pastor Lefler served the Kirkwood and Altona UMCs in the Illinois-Great Rivers Annual Conference. He served at Shelley, Aberdeen, American Falls, and Chubbuck UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference.

Jeanne C. Hunnex Hall, surviving spouse of Rev. Myron (Mike) Hall, died November 17, 2019, in Salem, OR. Jeanne is survived by three children, Diane Dorsch, James Hunnex, and Richard Hunnex; and three step-children, Lenore Hall, Lark Hall, and April Hall Cutting, along with 11 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Hall, who died in 1997, and stepson Scott Hall who died in September this year.

After her marriage to Reverend Hall in 1975, Rev. Hall served the Mid-Willamette Council of Governments as a Health and Aging Planner, Jefferson-EMO Director of Legislative and Government Affairs, and as pastor at Eugene: Wesley and West Salem UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. He retired in 1985.

Richardson, who died in 2012, and a brother, Yuji.

Reverend Austin served St. Charles Stockton in the Minnesota Conference; Hathaway in the East Ohio Conference; Yakima Wesley in the Pacific Northwest Conference; Coos Bay, Portland: Centenary- Wilbur, Eugene: Asbury, Salem: Jason Lee and Portland: Laurelwood in the Oregon-Idaho Conference before retiring in 1988.

Retired Pastor, Reverend Carol J. Thompson, died on September 11, 2019 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Carol is survived by her daughter, Alysia Downs. She had 1 grandson, Weston.  

Reverend Thompson served at the Nooksack Indian UMC in the Pacific Northwest Conference.  She served at Monroe, Lyons, New Meadows, Filer/Jerome, and Florence UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. She served as Executive Director of the Western Small Church and Rural Life Center in Filer, Idaho, and was on the faculty of the Northwest House of Theological Studies in Salem, OR. She served as Executive Director for Town and Country Ministries of the General Board of Global Ministries in New York. Carol retired in 2013.

Private family services will be held in Hawaii. A celebration of Carol’s life will be held in Oregon sometime next spring; details at a later date.

Mary Margaret Turner, mother of Reverend Marshall Wattman-Turner, and surviving spouse of Reverend G. Wesley “Wes” Turner, died on Friday, August 9, 2019.  Margaret is survived by her 3 children, 9 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
 
Rev. Wattman-Turner is currently serving as the Abundant Health Coordinator for the Oregon-Idaho Conference.  Rev. Wes Turner, who died in 2000, served at Tuscola in the Northwest Texas Conference and as a chaplain in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy. He served Salem: Leslie UMC, Lebanon, Grants Pass UMC and Silverton UMC in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. He retired in 1969.
 
A memorial service is being planned for October at the Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 14700 SE Rupert Drive, Oak Grove, OR 97262, where Margaret had been a member and active in United Methodist Women since 2001.

Reverend Wise served Bellegrove UMC in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference; Wiconisco-Loyalton UMC in Susquehanna Conference; Clarksboro UMC in Greater New Jersey Conference; Homer and North Pole/New Hope United Methodist -Presbyterian, Alaska Missionary Conference; LaGrande & Rupert UMCs in Oregon-Idaho Conference. Rev. Wise retired in 2005.

Dorothy E. Wood, surviving spouse of Reverend John Wood, died on May 24, 2019 in Pendleton, OR.   Dorothy is survived by her children; David, Heather and Alfred. She is predeceased by her son, Keith.
 

Reverend John Wood served at Kentucky, Barbourville Circuit; Trial, Oregon, Portland: Garden Home; Myrtle point; Corvallis Assoc; Myrle Creek-Canyonville-Days Creek; Kimberly-Murtaugh; and most recently at Pendleton in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. He retired in 1993. 
 

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 8 at 1:00 pm Burnes Mortuary of Pendleton, 336 SW Dorian Ave., Pendleton, OR 97801, phone 541-276-2331.

Nancy E. White                                                           June 16, 1943 – March 22, 2019
 
                             
Nancy E. White, wife of retired pastor, Rev. Boone L. White, died on March 22, 2019.   Nancy is survived by her husband, Boone; children, Kristyn Rock, Amy Emmett, Tracy Allen, Wendy White and Ross White; and four grandchildren. 

Rev. White and Nancy served at Salem: Morningside, La Grande: First, Oregon City, Idaho Falls: Trinity, and most recently at Lake Oswego UMC in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. They also served at Anchorage: First UMC in the Alaska Missionary Conference. Rev. White retired in 1992.

There will be two memorial services: one will be held on Sunday, April 14th at 2:00 pm at Lake Oswego United Methodist Church, 1855 Southshore Blvd., Lake Oswego, OR 97034; and the other one on Friday, April 26th at 2:00 pm in the chapel at Wesley Homes at Lea Hill, 32049 109th Place SE, Auburn, WA 98092.
 
Memorial gifts in Nancy’s memory may be given to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).

Alice L. Smith, surviving spouse of Rev. David S. Smith, died on February 25, 2019, in Puyallup, Washington.   Alice is survived by her children; Colleen Smith, Davina Hartley, Debbie Meyer, Roberta Cole; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her daughter, Rev. Elizabeth Boerl.
 
Reverend David S. Smith served at Union Grove: Paris UMC in the Wisconsin Annual Conference; at Sweet: Montour Ola, Nampa: Southside Blvd., Wilder, Tygh Valley, Tillamook, Oregon City, Caldwell, Caldwell-Jordan Valley, Tigard, La Grande and Rupert in the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference.

Lorenz “Lefty” M. Schultz, Jr.                                September 17, 1937 – February 24, 2019
                        
 
Reverend Lorenz “Lefty” Myron Schultz died on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at the age of 81, in Albany, Oregon. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Schultz, daughter Kiri, and daughter-in-law Martha, the surviving spouse of his son, Kevin, who predeceased him. He is also survived by several stepchildren through his wife Barbara, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Reverend Schultz served in campus ministry at San Francisco State University and California State at Chico, and at Sierra Vista, Fresno, in the California-Nevada Annual Conference. He served at Portland: Errol Heights and Hughes Memorial, Grants Pass: Newman, Idaho Falls: Trinity, Eugene: Wesley and Forest Grove in the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference. He retired in 2001. He and Barbara made their church home most recently at Albany UMC.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 1:00 pm at the Albany First United Methodist Church, 1115 28th Ave. SW, Albany, OR 97321. (541) 928-3505
