Robert "Bob" Norton Peters

Robert (Bob) Norton Peters
October 10, 1930 – January 6, 2023 

The Reverend Robert (Bob) Peters died on January 6, 2023. Bob is survived by his wife, Peg; children David, Roger, Dan, and Katie; and three grandchildren. 

Rev. Peters served as pastor at Sutherlin/Wilbur, and was appointed as associate at Corvallis First while serving as campus pastor at the Wesley Foundation at Oregon State University. He was Director of the Wesley Foundation and later an Assistant Professor, both at the University of Oregon in Eugene. He was ordained an elder in the Oregon-Idaho Conference in 1956, and entered the retired relationship in 1982, then served 25 years with Public Defender Services of Lane County.

A memorial service will be held at Portland First United Methodist Church, 1838 SW Jefferson Street, Portland, OR, 97201, on Saturday, February 25th at 1pm.

The reverend Robert (Bob) Andrews-Bryant died on December 20, 2022. Bob is survived by his wife, Ruth, and daughter, Hilary.
 
Reverend Bryant served Glenn’s Ferry, Woodlawn, Patton Central, Heppner, Tigard, Shoshone, Richfield, Middleton, Wilder, and Joseph. He has been on honorable location since 2007.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Reverend Donald “Don” B. West  died on Tuesday, December 6, 2022. Don is survived by his wife, Janis; two daughters; Janna Harries and Dayna Grever; one son; Craig Hawkins; 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.  
 
Rev. Don West served New Meadows, Wendell-Hagerman, Emmett-Sweet, Portland: Laurelwood-Errol Heights, Laurelwood, Nehalem Bay and Ontario First UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference.  Rev. West retired in 2001.

A memorial service will be held at later date in January.

The Reverend James Hulett died on Wednesday, November 23, 2022. James is survived by his wife, Mary Hulett and son; David Hulett; daughter Abby Weisenhaus; 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
 
Reverend Hulett served Salem: First, Portland: Vermont Hills, Portland: Trinity, Boise: Hillview,  and Lake Oswego UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. Rev. Hulett retired in 2003.

The Reverend Donald Knepp died on Thursday, November 17, 2022. Don is survived by his wife, Shirley who is a retired United Methodist Deaconess.
 
Reverend Knepp served Echo, Haines, North Powder Community, Myrtle Creek, Canyonville, and Days Creek UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. Rev. Knepp retired in 1998.

Reverend Charles “Chuck” C. Kerr  died on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. Chuck is survived by his four sons; Nathan “Nat”, David, Tim and Peter Kerr; and 2 grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife, Margery and daughter, Lori.
 
Rev. Chuck Kerr served Cicero-Hawthorne UMC in the Northern Illinois Conference and Madras, Hood River/Pine Grove, McMinnville, Portland: Rockwood, and Salem: Englewood UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference.  Rev. Kerr retired in 1988.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, January 22, 2023, at Rose Villa’s Performing Arts Center, 13505 SE River Road, Portland, OR 97222.

Reverend Jim Parr Philipson died on Sunday, October 16, 2022. Jim  is survived by his wife, Reverend Bonnie Parr Philipson, and his two daughters; Ashley Dienst Philipson and Katherine Parr Philipson.
 
Rev. Parr Philipson served South Douglas Parish (Myrtle Creek/Canyonville/Days Creek), Idaho Falls: St. Paul’s, Bend, Tigard, Gresham, and Corvallis UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference.  Rev. Parr Philipson retired in 2014.

Reverend Larry Monk died on Tuesday, October 11, 2022. Larry is survived by his wife, Linda; his eight children; Cheryl Gertz, Daryl Monk, Tanya Mounts, Laurie Fugle, Jeanie Monk, Daniel Monk, David Kowalsky and Casey Christopher; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
 
Rev. Monk served Hampton-Glen Gardner in the Northern New Jersey Conference and West Salem, Sheridan, Stayton, Portland: Garden Home, Portland: Bennett Chapel/Lents, Sweet Home, Roseburg, Oregon City and Metzger in the Oregon-Idaho Conference.  Rev. Monk retired in 1997.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.  The family will be sitting Shiva this week on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 5:00-7:00 pm at their home and people are welcome to stop by to offer condolences.

Annette “Ann” Williams, surviving spouse of Reverend Elwyn died on Monday, August 15, 2022. She is survived by three sons; Mark, Robert and Thomas; daughter Gail Bloom; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
 
Reverend Williams served in the North Central New York, South Indiana, Holston and East Ohio Conferences. He served as chaplain at Pacific University, Willamette University, and University of Southern Florida as a member of the Oregon-Idaho Conference. He retired in 1985.

Reverend Moli serves at the Canyonville and Myrtle Creek UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference.

Reverend Dr. Allyn C. Rieke died on Wednesday, July 27, 2022. Allyn is survived by his wife, Patricia; his children, Allyn Rieke, Jr., Diana Ernest, Barbara Wright, and JoAnn Dohn; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa, and grandson, Stephan.

Rev. Rieke served at St. Helens, Trinity, Montavilla, The Dalles, and Pioneer UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. Rev. Rieke retired in 2001.

Reverend Paul LaRue died on Saturday, June 4, 2022. Paul is survived by two daughters, Mary LaRue and Martha Stallman; one son, Arthur LaRue; and two grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth LaRue.

Rev. LaRue served at Murtaugh/Hansen, Gooding, Boise: Collister/Eagle, Buhl/Castleford, Portland: Sunnyside, Pendleton, Dallas and Falls City UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. He also served as Director of Habitat for Humanity, Portland and with the United Campus Christian Fellowship at Western Oregon State College.  Rev. LaRue retired in 1989.

Marjorie “Jean” Nilsen, surviving spouse of Reverend Orville Nilsen, died on Saturday, May 28, 2022. She is survived by her five children, David Nilsen, Jeff Nilsen, John Nilsen, Carol Damonte, and Cathy Thoma. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Rev. Nilsen served at Portland: Garden Home, Seaside, and Mountain Home UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. Rev. Nilsen retired in 1996.

A memorial service for both Reverend Orville and Jean Nilsen will be held at Bethel Congregational United Church of Christ, 5150 SW Watson Avenue, Beaverton, OR 97005 on Sunday, August 7 at 3:00 p.m. with a reception to follow at Cathy Thoma’s home.

Elizabeth S. Hall, surviving spouse of Reverend Wesley Hall, died on Monday, March 7, 2022. She is survived by her children: daughters Sharon, Brenda, and son Garry; 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.  
 
Reverend Hall served at Odell, Bay City-Garibaldi, Halsey, Amity-Willamina, Amity-McCabe, Monroe-Alsea, Portland:Wilshire, and Burley UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. He retired in 1985.
 
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, April 9, 2022, at 1:00 p.m., at Gresham United Methodist Church, 620 NW 8th St., Gresham, OR 97030.

Rev. Shirley served at Halsey and Shedd UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. Rev. Shirley retired in 1999.

Reverend Margaret Golden died on Monday, February 14, 2022. Rev. Golden is survived by her five children: David, Teresa, Paul, Kathryn, and Thomas. She is also survived by four grandsons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Golden.
 
Rev. Golden served at Dundee, Sheridan, Amity, and McCabe Chapel UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. Rev. Golden retired in 2006.

A memorial service for Rev. Golden will be held sometime this summer.

Reverend Bergacker served at Baker City and Glenns Ferry UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. She retired in 2012.

Rev. Steele served at Santa Barbara First, Chatsworth, and National City First UMCs in the California-Pacific Conference. He served at Kimberly: Crossroads, Rupert, North Bend, Cottage Grove and Drain: Hope UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. Rev. Steele retired in 2015.

Rev. Shortreed served at Bern UMC in the Kansas East Conference. He served at Ashton, Portland: Pioneer, Madras, Portland: Cherry Park, Idaho Falls: Trinity, and Medford UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. Rev. Shortreed retired in 2011.

Tom Foster, died on Thursday, November 18, 2021.   Colleen is survived by her husband, Tom; their children Paul, Eileen, Mark and Heidi; six grandchildren (5 living); and three great-grandchildren.

Colleen served as Diaconal Minister in Education/Adult & Youth Ministries, as Organist, and as Diaconal Minister of Music, all at Roseburg UMC in the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference. She retired in 1996. Together, she and Tom served Haines/North Powder, Ontario: First, Madras, Pocatello, Salem: Trinity, and Roseburg UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference.  Rev. Foster retired in 1996. 

Colleen’s memorial service will be held on Friday, December 10, 2021, at 2:00 pm at Portland First United Methodist Church, 1838 SW Jefferson St., Portland, OR 97201.

Reverend Gregg Monroe died on November 11, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Carol, and three children: Kathryn, Daniel and John. He is also survived by four grandchildren.
 
Reverend Monroe served Jefferson, West Salem/Buena Vista, Portland-Cherry Park, Springfield Ebbett Memorial, Albany, Cottage Grove and Oakridge UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. He served as a U.S. Army Chaplain and was an Administrative Analyst for the State of Oregon. He retired in 2004.

Jeanne Secord, surviving spouse of pastor Darwin Secord, died on October 18, 2021. She is survived by eight children; sixteen grandchildren; 25+ great-grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren.

Rev. Secord served at Wallowa, Flora, Joseph, Fruitland, Prairie City, John Day, Kimberly, Murtaugh, Nyssa, Huntington, and Paul UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. Rev. Secord also served in the West Ohio and Pacific Northwest Conferences. Rev. Secord retired in 1988.

A memorial service was held at Mission Christian Fellowship Church, 525 NW Warrenton Drive, Warrenton, OR 97146 on Saturday, October 23, 2021.

Mary Loomis, surviving spouse of pastor Dayton Loomis, died on October 17, 2021. She is survived by her two sisters, Wanda Swanson and Cathy Johnson; and many nieces and nephews.

Rev. Loomis served at Clatskanie, Canby, Portland-Wilshire, Cornelius, Fossil, Veneta-Valley, West Salem-Buena Vista, and Mountain Home-Dundee UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. Rev. Loomis also served at Middletown South and New Haven-East Pearl in the New York Conference. Rev. Loomis retired in 1979.
A memorial service was held at Laurelwood Baptist Church, 17015 NE 6th Street, Vancouver, WA 98684 on Friday, October 29, 2021.

The Reverend Dr. William James “Jim” Stuart III, died on Saturday, May 29, 2021, in Christchurch, New Zealand.  He is survived by his wife, Gillian Southey; and three children. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren. 

Rev. Stuart served at First German UMC, as Professor of Religion, Greenville College,  John Wesley Lecturer in Systematic Theology at College of St. John the Evangelist in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference; Chaplain at Lewis and Clark College and Law School, Portland, in the Oregon-Idaho Conference; University Chaplain and Lecturer in Sociology and Peace Studies, University of Canterbury, Senior Minister at St. Andrews on the Terrace Presbyterian Church in Wellington, New Zealand; and Wainoni Methodist Church, Christchurch, New Zealand. Rev. Stuart retired in 2006.
A celebration of his life was held on June 3, 2021, at Durham Street Methodist Church, 1/309 Durham Street, Christchurch, New Zealand.

Rev. White served at Salem: Morningside, La Grande: First, Oregon City, Idaho Falls: Trinity, and most recently at Lake Oswego UMC in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. He also served at Anchorage: First UMC in the Alaska Missionary Conference. Rev. White retired in 1992.

Rev. DeVore served at Fairfield Circuit, Mt. Union, Gravity-Sharpsburg-Conway, and Menlo-Jefferson Center in the Iowa Conference; at Nome, St. John-Hope, and Fairbanks in the Alaska Mission Conference; and at Hermiston in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. Rev. DeVore served in extension ministry as Coordinator of the Alaska State Office of Volunteer Services, and as Coordinator of the Alaska State Office on Aging. Rev. DeVore retired in 1992.

He served as District Superintendent for the former Eastern and Southern Districts in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. He and Bev also served as GBGM missionaries to the Turnagain/Tri Anchor Ecumenical Parish in Alaska. Tom retired in 1997.

Janet M. Newberg                                      July 5, 1931 – July 2, 2020
                        
 
Janet M. Newberg, spouse of Rev. Robert F. Newberg, died on Thursday, July 2, 2020.  She is survived by her husband, Rev. Robert Newberg, and ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­one son, Kyl; 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. One son, Robert, preceded her in death two weeks ago.
 
Reverend Newberg served Lamoni Davis City, Churdan, Macedonia, Iowa City: St. Marks, Belmond, Tama Montour, and Living Faith UMCs in the Iowa Annual Conference; and at John Day and Pioneer UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference. He retired in 1995.

Judith "Judi" Day

Judith “Judi” Day                                 September 3, 1939 – June 28, 2020
     

Deaconess Judi Day died on Sunday, June 28, 2020. She is survived by her husband, Willie, and two children, Erik and Adam, and eight grandchildren. A son, Travis, preceded her in death last March.
 
Judi served as a Deaconess in California, and later at Jefferson UMC in the Oregon-Idaho Conference.  

A memorial service will be held at some point in the future when people can gather.

Thomas L. Truby

Reverend Thomas “Tom” Truby died on Monday, March 16, 2020. He is survived by his wife, Laura and two children: Angela and Aaron. He is also survived by two grandchildren.
 
Reverend Truby served Bradshaw-Lushton UMC in the Nebraska Conference and Bath, Climax and Mendon UMCs in the West Michigan Conference. He was appointed to the specialized ministry of pastoral counseling at the Samaritan Counseling Center of Benton Harbor/St. Joseph in the Northern Illinois Conference and Counseling Ministries in the West Michigan Conference. He served Clarkes and Willamette UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. He retired in 2019 and was serving at Clarkes UMC when he died.
 
The congregation at Clarkes UMC has placed their Easter flower cross out in front of the church (18773 S Windy City Road, Mulino, OR 97042) in memory of Tom and are encouraging people to come by as they can to place flowers and then send photos to Laura. A memorial service will be held be held sometime in the future.

A. Boyd Jeffery, spouse of retired pastor Rev. Gay Jeffery, died on March 13, 2020.  Boyd is survived by his wife, Gay; children, Kirk, Carl and Keith; and five grandchildren.
 
Rev. Jeffery served at the Caldwell, Wilder, Buhl and Blackfoot: Jason Lee Memorial UMCs in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. She retired in 2013.
 
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Ernest “Ernie” Stoppel, surviving spouse of pastor Jeanie Y. Stoppel, died on March 5, 2020.  Ernie is survived by his sons and their wives: Paul (Cathy) and Tracy (Cathy) and their grandsons: Jeff and Jordan.
 
Pastor Stoppel served at the Reedsport, Vale and Cherry Park Churches in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. She retired in 2001.

LaRae Groves, spouse of pastor Eugene Groves, died on February 10, 2020.   LaRae is survived by her husband, Eugene; children, Jeffry and Joel; and two grandchildren. 

Rev. Groves served at Sutherlin-Wilbur in the Oregon-Idaho Conference and at Chugiak, Fairbanks and Anchorage First in the Alaska Conference.

Katharine Trost Stultz, surviving spouse of pastor John E. Trost, died on February 2, 2020.   
 
Reverend Trost served at Weiser-Huntington and Boise: Collister-Eagle in the Oregon-Idaho Conference. He also served at Mariana Grace, Malone and Cambellton-Spring Hill in the Alabama-West Florida Conference. He retired in 1976.
