Neva Mullins

6/9/2023

In Memoriam
Neva Mullins
November 11, 1934 – June 9, 2023

Neva Mullins, spouse of the Reverend Dennis Mullins, died in hospice care on June 9, 2023; Dennis and their daughter, Holly Needham, were present as she passed. Dennis and Neva were just short of their 67th wedding anniversary.

In addition to Dennis and Holly, Neva is survived by three grandchildren (Matthew, Lindsey, and Timothy), and one very new great-granddaughter, Riley. Neva was able to meet and hold baby Riley in the months before her death.

Neva was a supportive partner throughout Dennis' ministry. After their wedding, they went together to Boston where Dennis finished his ministry degree at Boston University School of Theology. Neva got a job working at BU in the office of the Dean of the University Libraries. Their first appointment was at Prairie City, Oregon, with a population of about 800--it was quite a change from Boston, especially when a herd of errant cattle wandered through the church yard during one of Dennis' first sermons! It was there that Neva served as a substitute teacher, as did Dennis, who also subbed as a school bus driver and was a volunteer fireman, in addition to being the church pastor. Dennis and Neva served a variety of small churches over the years, and always enjoyed the people they met all over the conference. In addition to Prairie City, Dennis was also appointed to Caldwell (ID), La Grande, Elgin, and Cove (as well as the Wesley Foundation at Eastern Oregon College), Sweet Home, Astoria, Grants Pass, and Trinity UMC, Eugene.

Another example of their effective partnership came when Dennis was appointed as Central District Superintendent from 1988-1994. Neva became the Central District Administrative Assistant, and together they traveled throughout the vast territory of Oregon from the Cascade Mountains to the Idaho border--including Ontario, where Neva had grown up.

A celebration of life was held on August 12, 2023, at Cascade Manor, where Dennis and Neva  lived for several years.

The two were passionate supporters of camp and retreat ministry. They spent at least a week at camp nearly every summer. Neva often served as a cabin counselor. They had especially fond memories of Wallowa Lake Camp. Gifts in Neva's memory may be given to Oregon-Idaho's Camp & Retreat Ministry. Donate online at www.gocamping.org/donate, or send a check made out to Camp & Retreat Ministry to 1505 SW 18th Ave., Portland, OR 97201.

Condolences may be sent to Dennis Mullins, 76 W 29th Ave Apt 2107, Eugene, OR 97405-3280; phone: (541) 434-4327.
