Congregation Statement
Bend UMC
Bend, Oregon

WHO WE ARE, WHAT TO EXPECT. We are people on a journey of life and faith.  There's nothing extraordinary about us except  that we have learned that God's creative love is the connective thread that holds the universe together.  We have learned that we need companions to walk the faith journey.  We are trying to be a faith community who values diversity and accepts all people just as they are.  We believe in following Jesus Christ more by what He told us to do rather than others telling us what to believe. We welcome all people, gay or straight, young or old, male or female.  Bend Church is more about people than place, but our downtown location is a special place in the heart of Bend.  Open doors, open hearts, open minds.  This congregation tries hard to create a safe place for everyone to ask their questions about God.  None of us has it all together.  We all need the grace of Jesus Christ. So Bend Church is a family where you can come dressed in your most comfortable clothes.  We love to laugh and are not afraid to shed tears.  Mostly we just want to be real people who face what life brings with a God who loves us no matter what.

First UMC
Salem, Oregon
Welcome Statement. In 1998 our church Administrative Council voted to include in our Mission Statement the phrase “diverse and inclusive” to describe who we are as a community of faith. In 2013 when our new mission statement was adopted the Administrative Council re-affirmed our commitment to be an inclusive and diverse church by adopting the following Statement of Welcome. All are welcome here. We believe that God’s love and grace extends to all people. We welcome all into our church family and into a walk with Jesus Christ, regardless of race, gender, marital status, nation of origin, physical or mental ability, sexual orientation, economic status, or any other label placed upon people. No matter where you are on your spiritual journey you are welcome in the life and ministry of First United Methodist Church of Salem. We are a diverse community of faith. At First United Methodist we have a great diversity of views on social, theological, and political issues and we celebrate this fact. Such diversity draws many to our fellowship and truly makes this church a gracious place. Here is a church where there is room to think and to question, to affirm faith and to listen to others, at times to argue and disagree, but always to appreciate the richness and wonderful complexity of God’s creation, especially as it is revealed in the variety of people and opinions in our congregation. This doesn’t mean there is nothing that binds us together. Quite the contrary is true. We are a community of people who are working out our faith together and we draw on Holy Scripture, Church tradition, Christian experience, and inspired reason as our sources of authority. We are joined by our United Methodist heritage and are being shaped by our common desire to walk as disciples of Jesus Christ. There is a diversity in our church which gives space for personal faith development and encourages actions of social justice and love.

We don’t care if you’re more Catholic than the Pope, more Methodist than Wesley, or haven’t been in church since little Joey’s baptism. We welcome soccer moms, Bronco dads, starving artists, tree-huggers, latte-sippers, vegetarians, junk-food eaters. We welcome those who are in recovery or still addicted. We welcome you if you’re having problems, if you’re down in the dumps, or in need of a prayer. Whether you had church shoved down your throat as a kid, or if you don’t like ‘organized religion.’ We’ve been there too. We welcome those who are inked, pierced or both.
